Five Tips for Learning English Faster
Practical, low-cost habits our students use to build English fluency between lessons.
Learning a new language is not only about the hour you spend with your tutor each week; it is about what you do with the other 167 hours. Students who make the fastest progress in our programme share a few simple habits that anyone can build into a busy week.
Practise a Little, Every Day
Fifteen minutes of daily practice beats two hours once a week. Short, consistent sessions help your brain retain vocabulary and grammar far better than occasional cramming. Try reviewing five new words each morning and using them in a sentence before bed.
Speak Out Loud, Even Alone
Reading silently is useful, but speaking out loud trains your mouth and ears together. Narrate your day in English as you go about it; describing what you are cooking, or what you see on your walk; builds fluency without needing a conversation partner every time.
Use What You Already Love
If you enjoy football, follow English-language football commentary. If you love music, learn the lyrics to a few songs. Connecting new vocabulary to things you already care about makes it stick, and makes practice feel less like homework.
Do Not Fear Mistakes
Every student in our programme, no matter how advanced, still makes mistakes in lessons. Volunteer educators expect this and are there to help, not to judge. The students who improve fastest are usually the ones who speak the most, mistakes included.
Consistency is key
Consistency is paramount and surpasses any app or textbook. This is why we ask our volunteer educators to deliver lessons asynchronously when technical issues arise. This way you can still access the resources and activities at your own pace whenever you have an internet connection.
