I Am Still Here

M

Mais

Mais is only fourteen. Yet her dreams far exceed her years. Through writing, she finds a way to organise her thoughts and transform pain into meaning. Mais does not aspire to live an ordinary life, but dreams of becoming someone of value and influence who leaves a positive mark on her community and is remembered for her kindness and contributions.

I cling on like a branch of a tree, and I bloom like a jasmine flower.

I Am Still Here In Arabic and English, by Mais

I am here… and I am still here.

I cling on like a branch of a tree, and I bloom like a jasmine flower.

But the bitter reality imposes its conditions, society imposes its judgments, and war has stolen our dreams.

So I try to fill my lungs with the scent of spring, with the warmth of the sun, and with a light that embraces me.

Yes… I was trapped inside a dark basement, in a life that does not resemble me, and in a world that is not my own.

I drift away for a while, and my tongue whispers: How harsh the present is.

And I wonder: What about the future? How will I create my own world? How will I answer my inner call, with courage, freedom, and honesty… how?

And with all these questions, I find no refuge but prayer.

So I raise my hands to the sky, asking God to change the state of our nation for the better, and to grant us, from His mercy, what dispels this darkness.

For He alone is capable of reviving hope within us, and writing for us the most beautiful endings.

Oh peace… oh peace, I call upon you to fulfil the dreams.

Sadly, there is no peace, and there are dreams, but without peace, there are no dreams.

So I offer my peace to peace itself, and I speak to it as if I were speaking to the clouds.

I ask it: When will you return and make the days bloom again?

For the night has grown long, and the darkness has deepened.

Yet we are still waiting for a dawn that carries peace.
