I am here, as I never have before.

Between North and South In Arabic and English, by Noor

I am here, as I never have before.

I leave my home, forced, under the shadow of death, leaving everything behind and leaving my heart with it, toward an unknown destination — a place I had always seen as distant, yet it is fate.

I walk toward it now with heavy steps, burdened by years of sorrow.

I see my reflection on the ground, my back bent by the weight. I see my grandmother and remember her stories of the Nakba. It is my turn now.

It is a cycle of oppression, grandmother, written upon us here.

Here, every kind of death lies on the table. The end of days has come, gallows raised across the city, poison scattered here.

And I find myself killed by scenes of waiting, by trembling hands and questioning eyes. Yet I comfort my heart, telling it that no matter how long it lasts, it will pass.

But there is another kind of line — one you stand in for a long time, afraid your turn will come, wishing it never will.

Yet it is death; it asks for no permission. It tests us through those we love most and reminds us there is no escape from here.

Yet I am here too, embracing my limbs, shielding my eyes, afraid that a missile might tear them away and leave me helpless here.

Death has killed love, leaving the beloved alone time and again, while others have found their survival in a tent that brings them with their loved ones here.

But this is me defying reality, refusing to live with it. I flee from it, creating another self in my imagination, that resembles me.

Until it arrives, I try to survive here with my heart.
